Equity

Equity is a mixed-media painting that explores the complex nature of justice and its importance in a society. In my work, as an Armenian-Greek born in Turkey, I wanted to challenge the concept of having lived in a country where justice is lacking. This painting is a representation of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, war, handicrafts, peace and especially of justice and victory. I feel a deep connection to the Athena archetype. She is also known as Nike, as my name, Veronika, which means 'bringing victory'.
The work blends the softness of the brush strokes and the sharp-cut rectangular and square forms. The achromatic collages, on which parts of Athena’s statue and owl (symbol of wisdom) are depicted, create a contrast with the gold, warm colours. The pixelated effects created turn it into a blurry image in some areas of the painting, which refers to the unclear historical facts of the past.
